Increase Your Dating Confidence with Cosmetic Dentistry

Duane Kelly

Dating can be really nerve-racking, especially when you're not happy with your appearance. If you dislike your teeth, you might find yourself feeling reluctant to smile, avoiding dates that involve eating, and worrying about that special first kiss. A 1998 survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry showed that 85% of adults believe that an unattractive smile makes a person less appealing to the opposite sex — so your fears may not be totally unfounded.

Luckily, there are many ways to improve the look of your teeth so that you're free to focus on getting to know the person you're dating, rather than stressing about how you look. Whether your teeth are wonky, damaged or discoloured, there's a cosmetic procedure that can help. Read on for details on some of the most common ways to get that Hollywood smile.

Laser whitening

Laser whitening, also known as power whitening, is one of the most effective ways to improve the appearance of yellow or discoloured teeth. During treatment, your mouth will be held open by a dam and a bleaching product will be painted onto your teeth. A laser is then shone onto the teeth, activating the bleach and making it work more quickly. You should see noticeable results on the day of your treatment, and your teeth could look up to six shades whiter. If you're not 100% happy with the results, then the process can be repeated. Once you've got your teeth looking the way you want them, be sure to avoid too much coffee, citrus fruits or fizzy drinks — these can all stain your teeth.

Clear plastic braces

You might associate braces with spotty teenagers, but there are actually loads that are specially designed for adults. By choosing a clear plastic brace, you won't have to worry about unsightly metal braces, which probably wouldn't do much for your confidence on dates. Clear plastic braces will be specially moulded to your mouth, and will gently push teeth into place. You'll be provided with new braces every few weeks until your teeth are perfectly straight. The exact time your treatment takes will vary according to the starting condition of your teeth. The braces are easy to remove and can be taken out while eating, so you won't need to worry about food getting stuck in them during a romantic dinner.

Crowns and veneers

For teeth that are chipped, broken, or discoloured beyond the help of whitening treatments, crowns or veneers are your best option. These small pieces of ceramic will be shaped to match the rest of your smile perfectly and then glued on top of the existing tooth. Done correctly, veneers will look indistinguishable from your natural smile and won't be noticeable to others while eating, talking or kissing.
